  • CLASSROOM CHAMPIONS: Lowcountry nurse collecting feminine products for middle schoolers

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A North Charleston school nurse says she is passionate about making sure every middle school girl is comfortable in her own skin.

Markita Johnson is the school nurse at Jerry Zucker Middle School and is a mother of three girls. Johnson is always on the go assisting her students when they’re sick, injured or in need of medical assistance.

Johnson says middle school can be the most chaotic time in your life. Between changes in the body and puberty, students rely on Johnson to feel safe at school. Johnson says for both the parent and the child, it can be a confusing time. As a mom of three girls, she wants every parent to be able to speak to their daughter and share comforting words in an emotional moment.

For her Donors Choose project, Johnson is asking for feminine products, pants and underwear for girls. She says most parents don’t keep extra clothes in the car for their teenage girls and no parent wants to hear that their child has had an accident at school.

“Some parents can’t necessarily get to their kid fast enough. I want to be able to have supplies here that they need so I can get them back to feeling good so they’re able to return to class and not feeling sad about it,” Johnson says. “I think about my three girls and how I’d want their experience to be at school. I want them to feel clean, be confident and I want them to know it happens to all girls. There is someone in the building that is there to help them.”

Johnson says the school is always in need of newly packaged unused underwear and feminine products for females in various size ranges.
